Welcome to the 2011 New Literacies Teacher Leader Institute!
New Literacies Institute Inspires 21st Century Teacher Leaders
July 25 - 29, 2011
The week long institute entitled, “Inquire, Collaborate, Create: New Literacies for Teacher Leaders,” will focus on how new digital tools can create challenging and engaging learning opportunities for students and teachers. Teachers will come together to engage in project-based inquiry, and to answer the question: ”What will you contribute as a new literacies teacher leader?”
Teachers will be inspired in Looking Up and Out sessions by featured speakers such as Don Leu from the University of Connecticut, who will challenge the group to promote equity for all students by teaching online reading comprehension.
During Digging Deeper sessions, teachers will learn how social networking environments can be applied to the classroom and explore strategies for online reading using dynamic instructional and assessment models for 21st century learning. Additionally, we will learn how to use video as a learning and creation tool that can amplify student engagement, creativity, and complex thinking. Each afternoon, teachers will engage in Cool Tool sessions featuring technologies such as Voicethread, Prezi, Xtranormal, Google Forms and much more.
Teachers will also participate in Design Studio where they will collaborate with a partner to create an innovative inquiry lesson based on curriculum standards. These hands-on, minds-on experiences will prompt teachers to design and produce innovative lessons using new digital media. Throughout the week teachers will engage in 21st century forms of communication using Twitter, Nings, and wikis.
We will culminate the work on Friday in a Design Studio Showcase, where teachers will share the innovative inquiry projects they created during the week. Teachers will explore their leadership styles and create a plan to engage partners and lead new literacy innovations in their school, district, and/or state. Teachers will explore new visions and gain new knowledge about how to tap students’ curiosity, unleash creativity, engender 21st century skills, as well as be change agents for a new educational era.
